Roof Safety and Access
The roofing industry is committed to ensure everyone goes home each night without injury. Like all of us, they have the right to feel safe while working.
Working at heights requires a safe approach due to the risk of falling. The government has implemented strict legislation. Government has also introduced bigger fines for not having correct procedures. If our people are on the first rung of a ladder there is a risk that needs managing. If a contractor is found working at heights without taking precautions, training or equipment; he can be fined for it.
It is surprising what risks some customers expect us to undertake to fix their problems.
We are obligated to undertake safety assessment before walking in to a work site. Once the risks have been assessed, implementing correct measures is done to safeguard people from falling.
This process is implemented to just look at the roof. We can sometimes see this from an Ariel photograph or by attending the site.
Options for Staying Safe
- Viewing the roof from the ground.
- Rope Access equipment.
- Edge protection.
- Cherry picker.
Roof Leaks Can be hard to find
Roof leaks can be difficult to locate.
Searching for roof leaks in areas where it enters below the visual surface is difficult. This type roof leak may need removing the sheets and replacing them with new. Visiting the roof area when it is raining may help in locating the leak. A test with a hose may also help although a hose cannot deliver as much water as the rain. In any event, a trial and error approach is used.
It is neither possible nor recommended to analyze the price of roof leak repairs until we find the problem. In some cases, the leak is coming from far up the roof and is between the roof and the building paper.
The leak can be in a completely different place from where it is coming through the ceiling.
Small repairs may be false economy. Its better to get something for your money than lose it all on a repair that does not work long term.
Many a times, home owners and builders try to locate the roof leaks by themselves but they are unsuccessful. This usually results in losing the roof silicon and wastage of it. It also results in making the problem worse. Silicon will not stick to rust nor can it be applied over a crack for long term results.
The building code in New Zealand requires the repair to last at least 15 years.
Roof leaks can originate from a tiny area narrowing itself to a long way underneath. It is better to use the money towards a repair that lasts longer than a temporary repair. A more long term repair using new roofing screws and or materials is a better solution.
