Gas Ducted Central Heating
Why is central heating so expensive to run?
Most old homes are not insulated because insulation was not required as a Building code requirement in past years.
It is due to this fact that the energy that you pump in (read money) is lost through the walls and ceilings. Because central heating usually heats the whole house, the energy is lost through more surface area hence the heat loss is high.
The heat is also lost in transmission via the ducting between the furnace and the outlets before it gets to the place it is needed.
What then are the alternative options?
- Heat only those rooms that you need.
- Install insulation in the ceiling and walls.
- Install Double Glazing.
- Install portable natural gas radiant fires in the rooms where you need heat. E.g. family rooms, lounges etc.
Maintaining Central Heating Efficiency
It is important to have your central heating unit maintained yearly. Ducting can come apart and filters become clogged causing high energy bills.
High Efficiency
Gas central heating units come in low, medium and high efficiency units. Its important to use high efficiency units for units that are used a lot otherwise the gas bills will be high. It pays to buy the higher priced units.
