Merry  Chistmas and Emergency Hours

Welcome to Summer! It is official –      NIWA has announced that Wellington
is in for a long, warm, dry and
settled summer. Sounded  like excellent news to me so we will run with that, and see where it
takes us, when we reflect in April 2012.
At  Southern Plumbing & Gasfitting we think it’s important to keep  good customers like you informed with tips and other items of interest that will help make your life easier and, well, more enjoyable too!
That’s why we’re sending you our newsletter and details for our new “Loyalty Reward Plan”.
We hope you find it helpful and informative. It’s just another way for us to say “thanks,” and that we appreciate your business.

KIWI BBQ’s & Outdoor Built-In Gas

Fires

An iconic pass-time for our NZ summer’s, and
hopefully that will include Wellington :0)

NIWA did say we would be included after-all…

Gas Connections

Check the connectors and screws have not corroded,
and cooking burners are working efficiently.

An incorrectly  adjusted flame or dirty flame with yellow tipping is often caused by
dust/dirt build up. Lack of maintenance or poor  installation
if it is a fixed in appliance, could be producing lethal carbon
monoxide gas. In addition to this, an incorrectly adjusted or
non-maintained appliance is not efficient and doesn’t always produce
the desired heat, wasting energy.

Gas is safe The built-in safety features of today’s modern
BBQ’s and advances in technology ensure that gas is a safe energy
option.
There are strict regulations governing the handling and storage of gas.

Cleaning your BBQ

Let the BBQ cool down, before scraping off the  grease and disposing of the fat into your garbage bin. Avoid washing  off the
grease into your sink, as this is a common cause of “fat build-up” in  your drains, which eventually leads to a blockage. Matt’s
“Southern” tip – after heating up the hotplate, wipe it over with a cut  onion. He says it comes up beautifully clean.

Safety

Have your fire extinguisher handy, just incase you  have a mishap. On that note remember to stay well away from walls etc!!

Ensure your BBQ is secure and safe.

Shower and Sink Blockages

A common occurrence with clogging up showers and  sinks is soap and hair.

Hair does not break down so if the drainage  strainers are not cleared regularly (weekly) the hair will overflow to
the drains

– worse than that, the drainage blocks and an overflow happens to the  shower tray damaging surrounding floors.

Be mindful of our expected Wellington Indian  Summer, so there will be lots of hair-washing and sand from the beach  trips  through your shower :0)

When you get towards the end of the cake of  soap – throw it out, or recycle the scraps in a general melt-down for
re-use.

Slivers of soap attach themselves to other hair etc, and contribute to  blockages.

Laundry

Before you pack your bags, and head to the  beach to enjoy our wonderful summer ahead, turn-off the taps to your
washing

machine. If the taps are left turned on, there is constant pressure on  hoses, and should they puncture while you are away, it could  spoil your return home big time.

Chimneys

Summer is an excellent time to have these  removed.

Why  do plumbers remove chimneys?

Many  chimneys have gas fires or wood burners installed in them and we run
metal flues in their place after removal. We also match up the roofing  when the chimney is gone. Plumbers are very used to roofing work and  working at heights safely. In addition we are licensed to ensure a  quality job and can recommend any alternative heating once the chimney  is gone.

Leaving  a brick chimney in place is very dangerous and unnecessary. The bricks  are removed from site and some can be recycled after the mortar is  removed.

The  recent earthquakes in Christchurch have reminded us all about the  dangers of leaving brick chimneys in place.

There  was a photo in the Dominion of a chimney in Christchurch that slid down  the roof, over the side of the house and straight  through their car in the driveway. Just as well the family were not in  it at the time. Some chimneys fell straight through the roof and  all the way to ground taking out ceilings and floors all the way, not  to mention any furniture that got in the way. You see chimneys  are really heavy and once they get going there is no stopping them.

· Some are very quick and simple  to remove. They don’t have to be removed all the way to the ground. Often lots of space can be  freed up also.

·The house can also be warmer  and there is no need to  maintain them in the future.
